Because it's a monument, it is a ruin. The building next to the exhibition space Nieuwe Vide is a skeleton, a framework of 'legal' consequences from concepts like 'ownership' for future profit. This work inspired by the theory I was reading for my thesis, and my background as a squatter. It was made during my master at the Dutch Art Institute (2018 - 2020) and presented at Radio Kootwijk. In this research period I thought about feminist geography and how space, surrounding and norms have formed themselves around patriarchal structures, including this unrealistic, mythical and exclusive idea of owning bricks, within this time of neoliberal capitalism. The soundscape was made of all the feedback audio recordings of my fellow students during those 2 years, sounds that will make these brick walls tremble until they fall apart. This work was inspired by the writing of Walid Sadek - A ruin to come and by my work for the housing movement, while simultaneously working for Nieuwe Vide, an institute that had a squatting background, yet is now in a precarious position, exploring how to co-exist in these times of gentrification and lack of funding. I see this building and its surrounding changing everyday, parts of it are gentrified and other parts like this building is falling apart every day a little bit more,it shows the failure a unsustainability of capitalism in its physical form.
